Aspirations of mongerhood
Who’d have thought a group of fifty Golden Bears would convene by Strawberry Creek one evening in April to taste a Bavarian cheese known as Alp Blossom with a monger named Ziggy, and be changed for life?
Last month we welcomed an udderly inspiring guest, the rind-owned cheese monger Sigfried “Ziggy” von Frankenberg-Leu. He took us on a journey through raw milk co-ops and cattle-horn farming and vats of exploding cheese. With him we traversed the Alps to taste quite possibly the most delicious cheeses that have ever graced our lips — OG Kristal, 1655 Gruyere, Hornkase, and of course, Alp Blossom.

Ziggy showed us that being a cheese monger is not only about understanding the history of dairy and the complex processes of cheese-making, but also about being a true Global Citizen. He has traveled the world extensively in search of the finest curds, becoming a leading expert on cheese importation. Ever bought cheese from the famed Cheese Board or Market Hall? Ziggy’s the one who got it there!
We left our little grove of redwoods markedly changed. Ziggy’s immense treasure trove of knowledge, sense of humor, and effortless cool drew us into the monger world and allowed us to wonder: Maybe that could be me one day.
Thank you Ziggy!!!
